Charlotte's Picks!

It's time to vote again!  Read through the descriptions of Charlotte's three picks and once you've made a decision hop on over to the blog and vote on the poll at the top right!

Never read:
Flowers in the Attic by V. C. Andrews...yeah gothic twisted fairytale!

Summary:
Such wonderful children. Such a beautiful mother. Such a lovely house. Such endless terror!

It wasn't that she didn't love her children. She did. But there was a fortune at stake--a fortune that would assure their later happiness if she could keep the children a secret from her dying father.

So she and her mother hid her darlings away in an unused attic.  Just for a little while.

But the brutal days swelled into agonizing years. Now Cathy, Chris, and the twins wait in their cramped and helpless world, stirred by adult dreams, adult desires, served a meager sustenance by an angry, superstitious grandmother who knows that the Devil works in dark and devious ways. Sometimes he sends children to do his work--children who--one by one--must be destroyed....

Has read:
Junky: The Definitive Text of "Junk" by William S. Burroughs...yeah beatniks!

Summary:
Before his 1959 breakthrough, Naked Lunch, an unknown William S. Burroughs wrote Junk, his first novel. It is a candid eye-witness account of times and places that are now long gone, an unvarnished field report from the American post-war underground. Unafraid to portray himself in 1953 as a confirmed member of two socially-despised under classes (a narcotics addict and a homosexual), Burroughs was writing as a trained anthropologist when he unapologetically described a way of life - in New York, New Orleans, and Mexico City - that by the 1940's was already demonized by the artificial anti-drug hysteria of an opportunistic bureaucracy and a cynical, prostrate media.

Book-to-Movie:
Back Roads by Tawni O'Dell...yeah serious family probs mixed with a Mrs. Robinson thang!

Summary:
Set in western Pennsylvania, Back Roads is the story of newly orphaned Harley Altmyer (his mother is in jail for killing his abusive father) who, at 19, must shoulder the burden of caring for three younger sisters and struggle with his growing obsession for the sexy mother of two living just down the road. Selected by Oprah for her Book Club™ and celebrated by readers and critics alike, Back Roads announced the arrival of a major new talent.

What to choose??

If you girls pick a good book I'll have Mom make us an Italian cream cake. =)

Looks like Back Roads is the winner! So, Charlotte can start throwing around some dates (and hopefully making a convincing argument for a certain cake to be made)!

FYI - there are 3 of 5 copies available at the library

Well, as far as dates, I know that July is kind of busy for everyone. The only weekend that I can really do it is the weekend of the 15th.

The other option is that we can wait until August. If we did that we could initiate my new place on like the 13th or 14th.

The weekend of the 15th works for me, but I would also be down for breaking in the new place.
PS...I hope you like this book Char because I want some cake!

I spoke with Mama Mia and she said she would be happy to make us a cake. Better start saving your calories now because this cake has 7 eggs in it, buttermilk and a whole stick of butter! It's soooooo good though. =)

I'll be in Pittsburgh the weekend of July 15th :(

Let's go with the weekend of August 12th then and initiate the new apartment. That will give everyone ample time to get and read the book (everyone being myself).

Crap...I just realized that I won't be back from California until the evening of the 14th! Argh, too much traveling this summer! If you ladies can reschedule that'd be cool...but I totally understand if you can't :)

How does Friday the 19th sound? Our furniture will be in by then!

Hey all! I just wanted to send a quick finalization of plans since we've done some off-the-blog talking. Book club will be Friday August 26th at my new place, 1245 S. Weatherstone Lane. I get off work at 6:00 so 7:00 would be a good time to head over. You can park in my driveway, in the parking spots to the left of my driveway, or the ones behind my place. I'll have dinner and Italian Creme Cake waiting.
